Nebra Ark's Architectural Design and Scenography
Seeming to "float" above the treetops, the visitors' centre is modelled on one of the Nebra Sky Disc's central symbols: the golden barge. The 60-metre-long structure at the foot of Mittelberg hill points towards the 30-metre observation tower at the site where the Sky Disc was discovered.
Depending on the time of day, the facades and glass front of the visitors' centre reflect the sky and earth in different ways.
Within the building, the landscape around Mittelberg provides the formal and contextual framework for the permanent exhibition. The actual landscape is "showcased" on one side, while the opposite wall features an artistic representation of that same landscape. In between, there is a "slice of heaven" - a spatial composition incorporating the motifs from the Sky Disc.
The architecture and scenography of the visitors' centre, the permanent exhibition and the observation tower are all the work of HOLZER KOBLER ARCHITEKTUREN.
Based in Zurich, the architecture firm has made a name for itself with a wide-ranging approach - spanning the disciplines of urban development, architecture, scenography, and the curation of exhibitions - that allows it to provide diverse designs and services for cultural events, the retail sector, gastronomy, home interiors and commercial ventures, as well for both touring and permanent exhibits and selected publications.
